Do I need a Permit?

Building
Permits needed:
• If walls are to be added (constructed) from finished floor to finished ceiling or above.
• If ceiling grid is to be replaced/installed.
• Deck/porches construction
General rule of thumb if anything is to be constructed that could potentially fall,
collapse, and or fail in general resulting in injury, or damage to someone or something.
Permit not needed:
• Framing in existing windows and doors
• Adding/removing mill-work, partition walls (not spanning floor to ceiling)
• Interior demo work
• Painting exterior and/or interior
• Stucco
• Window replacement
• Siding
• Roofing
Demolition
Permit needed:
• Exterior demolition of buildings/structures
Permit not needed:
• Interior demo of buildings/structures
Shed/storage/carport
Permit needed:
• Any prebuilt, manufactured, or constructed in place shed, storage building, carport
must be permitted.
Plumbing
Permit needed:
• Adding/altering Piping and/or fixtures (supply/drainage)
• Water service/sewer service replacements/repairs (over 5' of line to be
replaced/repaired)
Permit not needed:
• Replacement of existing fixtures
• leak repairs using a full circle clamp.
• Replacement of filters, cartridges, O-rings, removal/replacing toilet, etc.
Electrical
Permit needed:
• Adding any device and/circuit. Examples: Adding exit lighting, adding circuits,
adding lighting, cutting in devices.
• Service replacements including parts replacements such as main breakers
• Panel replacements including parts replacement such as circuit breakers
Permit not needed:
• Changing out devices Examples: switches, receptacles, lights, ceiling fans.

Q: Can I do work on my own residence?
A: Yes, if the person doing the work owns and occupies the residence, that person can do
their own plumbing, electrical, and construction. Permitting regulations still apply.
Q: Can I do work on my business?
A: A person can do up to $49,999.99 worth of construction without a contractor's license,
however any work that exceeds $49,999.99 in time and labor must be done by a licensed
contractor. All Plumbing with the exception what is listed above under not permitted
plumbing must be completed by a licensed contractor. All electrical must be completed by
a licensed contractor.
